Ms Regina Ress would be the Visiting Storytelling Mentor of Chennai Storytelling Festival 2017 (3-12 Feb 2017). 

Ms Laura Simms has been invited to be the the Visiting Storytelling Mentor of Chennai Storytelling Festival 2018 (2-11 Feb 2018). 


Regina and Laura both live in New York City, in Manhattan's West Village neighbourhood.  They have known each other for many years and often work in collaboration.  We could see them as a team.

Ms Regina Ress would give the Festival's Opening Storytelling Performance, "She was not afraid...", on Fri 3 Feb 2017, at 6pm, in Mylapore.  Details are here.

Regina has been an "Arts in Education" professor / teacher-trainer / workshop-leader for 20 years. 

She instructs teachers regarding ways of using storytelling (and music, movement, and visual art) to teach across the curriculum, including language/literacy. 

She has been teaching "Storytelling in the Classroom" in New York University's Educational Theatre Program for the past 15 years. 

For the past 8 years, she has been teaching courses involving, "Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages" (TESOL), and "English as Second Language" (ESL), in NYU's Department of Teaching-and-Learning

Regina is
conversant in Spanish, and works with Spanish-speaking teachers and students who are in the process of teaching-and-learning English. 


She has told stories in Spanish in festivals in Madrid (Spain), Tenerife (Canary Islands), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Zacatecas (Mexico), and Ambato (Ecuador).  She also tell stories bi-lingually in NYC.

Cultural areas she has lived in, and tells stories regarding, include South America, and the USA states of New Mexico, Hawaii, and New York. 

Regina has been a professional performer for 40 years.
Her acting career has included roles in Broadway and off Broadway plays, national tours, and regional theater.  She has performed in many places, including the White House.


She has been a professional storyteller for 25 years.  She has won awards from the USA's National Storytelling Network, and has given numerous performances and workshops at the NSN's annual National Storytelling Conference. 


Regina has made an award-winning CD of original stories about New York City.

For CSF 2018 -- Laura Simms, Bio-data

Laura is a national (USA) and a global treasure. 

She is one of the founders, and continues to be one of the leaders, of the "global storytelling revival," which coalesced in the 1970s (around 40 years ago).

Laura is known for brilliant psychological and other insight into both stories, and into the process of the storytelling event.


Laura has worked with students -- both children and teenagers -- and teachers in schools throughout her career.  She also works with college students (UG and PG) and faculty.

Laura's approach to storytelling is permeated and enriched by her longtime involvement -- including as a meditation teacher -- with a form of Tibetan Buddhism (Shambhala, founded by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, ).
This approach includes,
* Contemplative Art (integrating art and culture with everyday life), 
* Shambhala Art (art that occurs through clear perception and expression), 
* Dharma Art (meditation in action; working with social action, healing, and education).
