Storytelling can be a powerful pedagogical
tool
for engaging students, conveying meaning, and
connecting curricular content with
imagination,
culture, and history.
Storytelling
often seems to be a natural
method for teaching Language Arts,
Literature,
and Social Studies, but what about the STEM
subjects?
(Science, Technology, Engineering,
Math.)
In
this workshop we’ll look at ways
different types of stories, from folklore to
original
narratives, can activate STEM learning. There
will be a variety of examples, and
opportunities
for participants to develop and practice
stories
for their own use in the classroom and
beyond.

Workshop participants are welcomed into an
experiential performing arts-based dialogue
between a daughter and father via community
engagement with the folktale, "The Handless
Maiden". Through story, music, movement,
and personal stories, we’ll explore possibilities
of engaging in participatory enactment of
folktales for enjoyment, emotional healing
and family/community cohesion.
How can we engage with a story from our
ancestors to feel more alive, reduce suffering,
and deepen connections with others and the
world? How can this affect intergenerational
and intra-community understanding and healing?
How might this apply to our everyday lives?
What might this have to do with joy, peace,
transformation, compassion, love, and
forgiveness?
We may not have any answers, but we’ll have
fun exploring the questions. We reference
personal and community sovereignty, the
mythological negotiation, the impact of
ancestral legacies, metabolizing insults to our
spirits, creating and maintaining psychological
safety, recovery of self, cultivation of heart
and soul, and the welcome of village heart
and mind.
Come prepared with whatever expression
modes you enjoy. For example, you could
have writing and drawing materials available,
a musical instrument if you play one, warm up
your voice prior, and/or wear comfortable
clothes and have room to move, if wanted.
Cris Anderson (father/he/him) founded and
has led a 30-year audience-as-artist participation
theater based in the enactment of folktales,
Minnesota Folktale Gardening Club, for purposes
of enjoyment, emotional healing, gender
reconciliation and community building. He has
10-years of experience as a pre-marital coach,
and 12-years as a teaching artist with the
Minnesota arts and health/creative aging pioneer,
Kairos Alive! – founded and led by his wife,
choreographer/dancer/educator Maria Genné.
He has a background in journalism and is a
national award-winning documentary filmmaker
(Visible Target; Dwight in Denmark).
Parker Genné (daughter/she/her) is a singer/
dancer/actor/lyricist/composer with a disability.
She founded Folktopia Productions, featuring
her Ms. Luisa Eats cabaret,
which has toured
in the US and the Edinburgh Fringe. She co-
founded and was principal performer of theater
company, Impossible Salt, mounting seven
music-theater works based on folktales. Through
Folktopia, she developed a folk opera, Silver
Hands, based on the folktale "The Handless
Maiden". As Co-Artistic
Director at Kairos Alive!,
she has extensive experience in intergenera-
tional arts and health engagement programs,
including with people who are neuro-divergent,

"Telling Stories the Villupaatu Way".
For teenagers and adults.
Starting on Sat 10 Feb at
12 Noon (India time).
(90 minute segment.)
–––
The flier is here.
–––
Workshop Description:
Villupaatu is a traditional
oral storytelling form
from Tamilnadu, a southern
state from the Indian
Subcontinent. Villupaatu is the only art form that
imbibes the
"Muthamizh" aspect of poetry, prose,
and theatre in one form.
The beauty of this art form
is that anything and
everything under the sun can
be addressed
through this simple yet very
powerful form of
oral storytelling.
After doing research and
presenting papers on
this, I as a storyteller
feel the responsibility to do
my bit in making this art
form reach a wider
global audience.
Even though it has a certain
structure, the
flexibility of the artform
gives permission to the
storyteller to explore the
possibilities. Even some
of the stalwarts in this
field explore the possibilities
of including other languages
in their tellings to
connect to a wider world
audience.
This is a humble attempt to
introduce Villupaatu
step by step as a performing
art, that interested
storytellers from across the
world could explore.
Participants will be given
short introductions to
the origin of Villupaatu,
and its structure,
Participants will then
listen to a story in English
and will be doing individual
and group activities
that will help them create a
story the "Villupattu
Way" (predominantly in
English, but participants
are welcome to try it in
their respective mother
tongues as well).
Participants are requested to come with an open
mind, willing to unlearn and relearn. Kindly bring
notebooks, paper and pens to make notes.

Description:
While much may
be lost in the process of living,
much usually
still remains. When one is in moods
and periods of desolation,
when one feels a sense
of emptiness and
wanders across one's bleak inner
landscape, part
of the solution can be discovering
and forging deep
bonds with one's creative core.
In this process,
nature can provide inspiration.
Nature's resilience
can provide metaphors that
reinforce and
reignite one's own resilience and
regeneration,
and enable one to regain one's vitality.

Nicholas Pawlowski, M.Ed.,
founded The Story
Table Foundation to promote
mental and emotional
wellbeing through
interactive storytelling. Nicholas
believes that children
learn best when we talk with
rather than at them.
Consequently, back and forth
conversations about the old
stories foster healthy
childhood development, as
well as teach values
such as empathy,
thankfulness, kindness, and
cooperation. Nicholas loves telling in-person but
has also found that Zoom
(when used creatively)
is a beautiful use of
technology that is NOT
television! While this is a children’s program,
its message is not childish
(and all are welcome
to attend). At the Story Table Foundation, we
tell stories that people of
all ages can appreciate,
and make space for the
input and contributions
of our elders.

"Tree hugger" is a term of derision used to

However, this moving story of personal courage and
community action celebrates the defensive action.
Based on an actual event in northern India, this

Maiden". Through story, music, movement,
and personal stories, we’ll explore possibilities
of engaging in participatory enactment of
folktales for enjoyment, emotional healing
and family/community cohesion.
How can we engage with a story from our
ancestors to feel more alive, reduce suffering,
and deepen connections with others and the
world? How can this affect intergenerational
and intra-community understanding and healing?
How might this apply to our everyday lives?
What might this have to do with joy, peace,
transformation, compassion, love, and
forgiveness?
We may not have any answers, but we’ll have
fun exploring the questions. We reference
personal and community sovereignty, the
mythological negotiation, the impact of
ancestral legacies, metabolizing insults to our
spirits, creating and maintaining psychological
safety, recovery of self, cultivation of heart
and soul, and the welcome of village heart
and mind.
Come prepared with whatever expression
modes you enjoy. For example, you could
have writing and drawing materials available,
a musical instrument if you play one, warm up
your voice prior, and/or wear comfortable
clothes and have room to move, if wanted.
Cris Anderson (father/he/him) founded and
has led a 30-year audience-as-artist participation
theater based in the enactment of folktales,
Minnesota Folktale Gardening Club, for purposes
of enjoyment, emotional healing, gender
reconciliation and community building. He has
10-years of experience as a pre-marital coach,
and 12-years as a teaching artist with the
Minnesota arts and health/creative aging pioneer,
Kairos Alive! – founded and led by his wife,
choreographer/dancer/educator Maria Genné.
He has a background in journalism and is a
national award-winning documentary filmmaker
(Visible Target; Dwight in Denmark).
Parker Genné (daughter/she/her) is a singer/
dancer/actor/lyricist/composer with a disability.
She founded Folktopia Productions, featuring
her Ms. Luisa Eats cabaret,
which has toured
in the US and the Edinburgh Fringe. She co-
founded and was principal performer of theater
company, Impossible Salt, mounting seven
music-theater works based on folktales. Through
Folktopia, she developed a folk opera, Silver
Hands, based on the folktale "The Handless
Maiden". As Co-Artistic
Director at Kairos Alive!,
she has extensive experience in intergenera-
tional arts and health engagement programs,
including with people who are neuro-divergent,
and who have physical and cognitive disabilities.

Workshop Description: One
of the great gifts of storytelling
is its flexible immediacy
as well as its ability to address
difficult topics indirectly
through metaphor. As storytellers,
our ability to respond to
what is happening, both in the
world and in the listeners
who have gathered to hear story,
presents us with the
opportunity to ease minds and hearts,
strengthen individuals and
create community. What kinds
of stories, what themes,
what images can we bring when
asked to show up for our
listeners?

with oneself repeatedly to
maintain and strengthen the
muscle. This workshop is
for anyone who lives and/or
works with people having
developing young minds and
growing bodies (or plans to

people). Why and how do stories leave an impact?
How does retelling a story
help to develop perception?
Why does creating a story
also create perspective?
The workshop aims to answer
these questions, and to
assist participants to
apply the knowledge gained.

around
the theme, "Coming of Age".
These tales focus
on ways
characters may, over time, perhaps slowly,
attain
maturity, enlightenment, and new perspectives,
and
become more patient, compassionate, liberated,
and
purposeful.
