Festival Homepage.

The Festival's two themes are:

Storytelling and

1) "Growing, Maturing, and Transforming".

and

2) "Environment". Considering ways the

place one is in may affect one's thoughts

and mood.

–––

A) "Landscapes" –

For examples:

i) Tamil culture identifies five landscapes,

each of which corresponds to a stage

in a married couple's relationship.

Including:

"Seashore" (relating to the couple's

separation, because one partner might

be away on a sea journey), and

"Mountain Forests" (relating to the couple's

joyful reunion).

ii) In Indian culture in general, "Forests"

are often thought of as places for meditation.

–––

B) Being –

i) In a City, in a Town, in the Countryside,

at Sea, on an Island, away from the Earth,

in a Dream, etc.

ii) Indoors or Outdoors

iii) Offline or Online.

Workshop:

"Group Improvisational-Storytelling".

Starting on Sunday 16 Feb at

7:00pm (India time) / 8:30am (North Carolina time).

(90-minute segment.)

–––

Workshop Description

How do we heal a polarized world? . . . Through

stories! . . . We tell group improvised stories to

overcome the fragmentation and incoherence of

modern life.  We tell them to build community and

restore our integrity.  We listen and respond with

intent, not to prove our prowess as storytellers, but

to find community through group mind. The story

passes from one person to the next as each person

contributes the next small part of the story. Each new

piece continues the narrative while the narrative

supports the group and provides a framework through

which we connect around a common theme.

This workshop introduces group improvisational-

storytelling and explores group mind through hands-on

activities and side coaching.  We will begin with a simple

review of classic story structure and then dive into telling

group stories.  Please come prepared to listen, and to

be changed.

11) Carol Birch (Connecticut).

Workshop:

"It's How You Say It!"

Starting on Sat 22 Feb at

8:30pm (India time) / 10:00am (Connecticut time).

(90-minute segment.)

–––

Workshop Description

From confiding intimacy to bold declamations,

there's what we say and how we say it that

leaves listeners thinking: "She knows that

story 'cause she was there!"

We can get all the words of a story "right"

and fail to tell it in an engaging manner. This

occurs when a storyteller doesn't speak with

a range of perceivable attitudes. Attitudes

come to life when we're talking about people

we know and events that are real to us –

even when it's a folktale, literary tale, poem,

biography, history, etc.

"The failure of modern living is the failure of

the imagination. The root meaning of the word

imagine  is 'to picture to oneself.' In other words,

when we imagine, we create an inner picture of

something not visible to our physical eye. One

kind of picture we are all accustomed to is an

image of something we have done or witnessed.

This is the visual aspect of memory. It is not

imagination. Imagination requires something

more of us. It requires that we see what we have

NOT seen, what we may never see, what may

not even exist".

(Julius Lester, "Re-imagining the Possibilities,"

in The Horn Book, May/June 2000.)

Workshop:

"Tell a Child in Gaza's Tale: Sharing our Humanity".

Starting on Sunday 9 Feb at

7:00pm (India time) / 1:30pm (UK time).

(90-minute segment.)

–––

Workshop Description

"Tell a Child in Gaza's Tale" is a worldwide intercultural

storytelling project that seeks to amplify the powerful

voices and celebrate the creative story choices of young

Palestinians.

In this Workshop participants will

1) Learn to retell Malak in Gaza’s short tale about how to

live the best life.

2) Find out how "Tell a Child in Gaza’s Tale" is being

welcomed into homes and learning spaces around the

world and is offering us all opportunities to talk about

Palestine sensitively and humanistically.

3) Hear the deeply felt messages of solidarity that people

of all ages around the world are sending as they enjoy

learning and retelling the stories they have learned from

young people in Gaza

4) Have opportunities to share your thoughts and ask

questions.

Passing on such precious treasures freely given by young

storytellers whose hearts shine on brightly in the deepest

darkness is a simple way for people worldwide to deepen

our understanding and let young Palestinians thrive as

members of our global human family.

A Talk and Tales Session:

"Storytelling and Teaching-and-Learning

with Young Children".

Starting on Sun 16 Feb at

Noon (India time) / 7:30am (Croatia time).

(60-minute segment.)

–––

Session Description

This is a session for adults – teachers, educators,

parents, and anyone else who might be interested –

concerning

1) ways to tell Fairytales to children (5-11 years old),

and

2) ways to help the children relate to aspects of the

stories, using an Interactive-Creative approach.

A Croatian folktale will be told with voice and body,

and then will be retold in Kamishibai style (using

illustrations).  We will discuss advantages and

disadvantages of storytelling with pictures.

The session participants will then be invited to do

speech and drama exercises which are similar to the

exercises I invite child listeners to do.

My intention is to help listeners become parts of the

story, and along the way fall in love with the story

that has been told.

I will also offer some storytelling and teaching tools.

I have been leading Fairytale Interactive-Creative

Workshops for more then 10 years – in schools,

kindergardens, museums, libraries, cultural festivals,

etc.  Welcome all!

Workshop:

"The Art of Biographical Storytelling".

Starting on Friday 31 Jan at

8:30pm (India time) / 4:00pm (Germany time).

(90-minute segment.)

–––

Workshop Description

Please join us for this Workshop in which we

will explore the power of biographical stories!

Discover ways these stories work, why they

resonate deeply, and ways we can remember,

choose, and collect impactful stories from our

lives.

We will delve into the narrative preparation

process, focusing on the hero's journey. Where

is the heroism in your own life? Where does

the climax unfold? What challenges arise, and

in what ways are happy endings possible?

Additionally, we will explore ways integrating

fantastical elements – such as a talking

painting or a fairy – can enrich our stories.

Did your grandparents share tales of such

wonders? Let’s bring these magical elements

to life in your biographical stories!

"Kolam – A Journey Within".

Starting Sun 16 Feb at 2:30pm.

(90-minute segment.)

–––

Workshop Description

Kolams are the traditional rice flour art

drawn outside a South Indian home.

Kolams have transformative, meditative,

and healing properties – and are

associated with some mythological stories.

As a storyteller, Lavanya Prasad loves

connecting the dots to see the bigger

picture.  Sometimes she has wondered

if this could be in part because she was

also initiated into the art of connecting

the dots as a pattern – making Kolams –

by her mother, aunts, and grandmother,

when she was a little girl. The traditional

floor-art drawn using rice flour outside one's

home in South India, the first thing in the

morning, is a folk art that is passed down

from generation to generation.  Hidden

within this simple, humble art are serious

life lessons relating to the growth, maturity,

and transformation of one's soul.  Join

Lavanya as she helps decode this secret

in fun and engaging ways through stories,

games, songs, etc.  Learn to harmonize

your body and soul through observing and

creating Kolams.  Note: Please bring a

notepad and coloured pens/markers.

Workshop:

"Speaking Comedy to Power".

Starting on Sun 23 Feb at

7:00pm (India time) / 8:30am (Virginia time).

(90-minute segment.)

–––

Workshop Description

This is a Workshop on composing humor,

satire, and other forms of comedy in response

to stories presented by powerful individuals,

organisations, and ideologies presented by

politicians, political parties, corporations, etc.

Every entity in society, especially powerful ones,

tells stories.  In this Workshop, participants will

be coached in understanding these stories

and their implications, and in composing

comedy in response to these stories.

Political satire did not start with late-night TV.

Some of the earliest recorded humor satirizes

those in power.  Today our world seems

increasingly locked in a struggle between free

speech and autocratic power.

This Workshop will take participants across

cultures and eras to uncover ways comedy has

been a powerful tool for challenging authority,

resisting oppression, and sparking societal

change.  From ancient satire to digital-age

memes, discover the global stories of laughter

as a form of protest, and learn how political

comedy continues to inspire and empower in

today’s world.

This Workshop is dedicated to Munawar Faruqui

(India), Idrak Mirzalizade (Russia), Kirill Sietlov

(Russia), and Zarganar (Myanmar) – all of whom

have been arrested and detained within recent

years.

Nicholas Pawlowski, M.Ed., founded The Story

Table Foundation to promote mental and emotional

wellbeing through interactive storytelling.  Nicholas

believes that children learn best when we talk with

rather than at them.  Consequently, back and forth

conversations about the old stories foster healthy

childhood development, as well as teach values

such as empathy, thankfulness, kindness, and

cooperation.  Nicholas loves telling in-person but

has also found that Zoom (when used creatively)

is a beautiful use of technology that is NOT

television!  While this is a children’s program,

its message is not childish (and all are welcome

to attend).  At the Story Table Foundation, we

tell stories that people of all ages can appreciate,

and make space for the input and contributions

of our elders.

Starting on

Sun 16 Feb at 9:00am (India time), same as

Sat 15 Feb at 8:30pm (New Mexico time).

(90-minute segment.)

–––

Workshop Description

This is a Workshop on developing stories based

directly on one's life experiences but shifted slightly:

new characters dropped into a setting; encounters

where none existed; moments imagined, not lived.

That blurred edge between fact and fiction. True

Story, Memoir, Fantasy.

We live our lives. We share stories about our lives.

But sometimes, for artistic purposes, healing, or

just for fun, we might want to re-imagine a personal

moment or even a chapter from our lived experiences.

In this workshop, we will explore ways to creatively

tinker with a story we might want to tell, opening it to

new characters or eliminating old ones, include

dialogues that never happened but could have, shift

what happened or invent a totally  new plot-line to

share a place we love. And no, it is not “lying,” it is

creating fiction. I’ve done this. So can you.

Workshop:

"Creating and Telling Healing Stories".

Starting on Sun 9 Feb at 4:00pm.

(90-minute segment.)

–––

Workshop Description

In this Workshop, participants will have the opportunity

to think and share about hidden stories in their own

lives.  Sometimes we hide elements of our past even

from ourselves because the situation was too difficult

to process or we just want to move on.  However,

sometimes in our dreams, or in sudden moments,

memories of these experiences may be triggered and

we may feel the pain again.  The Workshop Leader

will seek to gently inspire and encourage participants

to 1) explore these uncomfortable moments, 2) piece

together what happened and how one has responded,

3) acknowledge what happened, and 4) share all of this

in a safe and supportive environment so we can process

what happened to us, and let love and light into those

broken spaces.  Along the way, participants will receive

training in putting memories of past difficult experiences

into new contexts to create new, more positive, stories.

Samatha Sharma has been telling personal stories

since 2016. She bas been a meditation teacher and is

currently studying for her Diploma in Homeopathy.

to Confident Storyteller".

Starting on Sat 15 Feb at

7:00pm (India time) / 2:30pm (Italy time).

(90-minute segment.)

–––

Workshop Description

In a world where strong communication skills

are essential, oracy remains a powerful yet

underutilised tool. "The Oracy Bridge: From

Reluctant Speaker to Confident Storyteller"

is a webinar designed to equip educators

and professionals with strategies to empower

hesitant speakers. Through the art of storytelling,

participants will discover approaches to help

individuals transform from reluctant speakers

into engaging storytellers, cultivating

communication, creativity, and confidence

along the way.

This session introduces oracy as more than

just fluent speech, viewing it as a skill that

supports academic growth and personal

expression. By leveraging storytelling, attendees

will explore how this medium naturally integrates

essential aspects of oracy - including voice

projection, structured thinking, and emotional

engagement - within an engaging framework.

The session offers a range of adaptable

storytelling methods that can be applied in

various educational and professional contexts,

helping to unlock the potential of each speaker.

Folktales narrated by people who live close to nature

represent interconnectedness, interdependence,

holism, synthesis, and circular patterns of life.  This

session will throw light upon Ecofemiotics as a discipline,

a portmanteau of Ecofeminist Semiotics, through a

re-reading of folktales.  It will put forward an innovative

folktale typology in terms of Space-Time, Nature-Culture,

Spirit-Matter and Society-Economy, which connects

women with the environment.  The session will present

the five stages of eco-storytelling, namely: Mindfulness,

Mediation, Mapping, Manifesto and Mission.

Participants will be encouraged to explore the concepts

in folktales, and then to narrate stories (with an image

as a prop) highlighting the significance of eco-storytelling

as a tool of consciousness-raising to create avenues

towards sustainable living and peaceful coexistence.
